History

SHRM Hawaii was first incorporated on September 13, 1989. Prior to that date, the organization operated as an association affiliated with the American Society of Personnel Administration (the predecessor organization to SHRM).

The organization initially consisted of a single chapter - called the “Hawaii Chapter” - which was actually located on the island of Oahu. As the organization grew, separate chapters were established on the Big Island, Maui, and Kauai. Although each chapter was autonomous, they were linked to the national organization through a “State Council.”

In 2003, the Hawaii State Council, the Big Island Chapter, the Kauai Chapter, the Maui Chapter and the Hawaii Chapter decided to merge their organizations into a single entity.

The goals of the “merger” were to:

  1. streamline operations and increase efficiency;
  2. make the organization more responsive to members and their professional needs; and
  3. establish and maintain programs to enhance recognition of human resource management as a profession.

The merger became effective on January 1, 2004.
