Ensuring Transgender Employees Have Equal Opportunities

In 2015, The National Center for Transgender Equality surveyed almost 28,000 transgender

individuals in the U.S. about their lived experiences, including employment:

Respondents reported on a wide range of workplace abuses, including direct discrimination and mistreatment by coworkers and supervisors. Seventy-eight (78%) of respondents said they experienced some type of direct mistreatment or discrimination.

“Forty-seven percent (47%) of survey respondents said they had experienced an adverse job action—they did not get a job, were denied a promotion or were fired—because they are transgender or gender nonconforming.“

“Forty-four percent (44%) of our respondents reported that they considered themselves under-employed.”

Before attending the University of New Mexico School Of Law, Kim Coco Iwamoto was a volunteer Legal Research Aide for the Hawaii Intermediate Court of Appeals. While in law school, Kim Coco served as a legal extern to the New Mexico Supreme Court. When she graduated in 2000, she received the Honors in Clinical Law Award. After passing the bar in Hawaii, Kim Coco volunteered at Legal Aid Society of Hawaii and worked as Managing Attorney for Volunteer Legal Services Hawaii from 2001-2004. She was elected to the Hawaii Board of Education in 2006 and re-elected to that office in 2010. In 2012, the Governor appointed, and the Senate approved, Kim Coco to serve as a Commissioner on the Hawaii Civil Rights Commission, of which she served till 2016. In 2013, The White House honored Kim Coco’s community advocacy as one of the Harvey Milk “Champions of Change”. She also served as a Certified Therapeutic Foster Parent to gay and transgender youth for 3 years.
